The Bombardier NV Neighborhood Vehicle: A New Image for Neighborhood Policing in Montreal

Montréal, Québec - 1998-05-27

Thanks to the Montréal Urban Community (MUC) police department, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and Bombardier, the Montréal population will benefit from a very special patrol this coming Summer.

Bombardier Recreational Products has provided the MUC with three Bombardier NV units to perform neighborhood policing. These vehicles are specially equipped with police lights and signage to patrol the streets of the Vieux Montréal and the Parc Jarry.

Several more similar projects have been initiated in North America since this new vehicle was launched by Bombardier. For example, the Peachtree City Police Department (Peachtree City, Georgia, United States), the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department (Tampa, Florida, United States) and the Vero Beach Police Department (Vero Beach, Florida) are three examples of police departments having recently offered this new service to their population.

"Bombardier Recreational Products and the Montréal Urban Community police have pioneered this new type of neighborhood policing in Canada. We are very proud of the relationship we have developed with the MUC and SAAQ to make this project possible. The approval of the Bombardier NV neighborhood vehicle for this type of service is a big step forward. We sincerely believe that the Bombardier NV vehicle is well suited for this type of operation", said Pierre Arsenault, vice-president of sales and marketing, neighborhood vehicles with Bombardier Recreational Products.

"The Bombardier NV neighborhood vehicle is integrated in our new neighborhood policing program. This initiative will bring our population and policemen closer. Among others, we believe that curiosity resulting from this new vehicle will be helpful in that respect. After biking and in-line skating policemen, this new service will allow us to broaden our interaction within the community" said Mr. Serge Meloche, assistant-director, operations coordination section at the MUC Police Department.

The Bombardier NV neighborhood vehicle is perfectly adapted to neighborhood policing. It offers standard features such as independent suspension, hydraulic disk and drum brakes, bumpers, safety belts and safety headlights. The two-seat vehicle is driven by an electric engine supplied with 12-volt acid-lead batteries recharged though any residential 120-volt socket. The Bombardier NV has a top speed of 40 km/h and can go up to about 50 km on a single eight hour charge.

Bombardier Recreational Products designs, develops, builds, distributes and markets Ski-Doo® and Lynx® snowmobiles, Sea-Doo® personal watercraft and boats, Bombardier NVTM neighborhood vehicles and Bombardier all-terrain vehicle. Snowmobiles, marine products and ATV are powered by Rotax® motors that are designed and built by Bombardier-Rotax which also builds motors for motorcycles and scooters.
